Chess: play the computer or a friend

Play a full game of chess against our computer. Pick level 1, 2 or 3, or invite a friend with a link and play each other online.

How to play

  • Tap one of your pieces to see where it can go (dots show empty squares, rings show pieces you can capture). Then tap the square to move.
  • Choose Level 1 (beginner: the computer makes mistakes), Level 2 (a steady club player) or Level 3 (looks several moves ahead and is hard to beat).
  • Start a new game as White (you move first) or Black (the computer moves first).
  • Take back undoes your last move and the computer’s answer, so you can try another idea.
  • All the rules are included: castling, en passant, promotion (you choose the new piece), check, checkmate, stalemate and draws by repetition, the 50-move rule and too few pieces.
  • Your game is saved on this device, so you can close the page and carry on later. Your wins, draws and losses are counted for each level.

Play a friend online

  1. Tap 👫 Play a friend, type your name, choose White, Black or Random, and tap Create invitation link.
  2. Send the link to your friend, for example with the Send on WhatsApp button. Keep the page open.
  3. Your friend opens the link, types their name and taps Join the game. The game starts on both screens, and each move appears on the other screen straight away.
  4. When the game ends, tap Play again for a rematch with the colours swapped. You can also Resign or Leave the game at any time.

Questions people ask

Is it free?

Yes. Free, with no sign-up and nothing to install. It works on phones, tablets and computers.

How strong is the computer?

Level 1 is for beginners and children: it often makes weak moves. Level 2 plays sensibly but can be beaten with care. Level 3 thinks several moves ahead and is a real challenge for club players.

Is my game saved?

Yes, on your own device. Close the page and your game is waiting when you come back. Nothing is sent to us.

Can I play against a friend?

Yes. Tap Play a friend, create an invitation link and send it to your friend (WhatsApp works well). When they open it, you play each other live on your own phones or computers. Nobody needs an account.
