About the Hijri calendar
- The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months, each 29 or 30 days. A Hijri year is about 354 days, so Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
- Year 1 began with the Prophet’s migration (Hijra) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
- This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, the standard calculated Hijri calendar used across the Gulf.
- Religious dates such as the start of Ramadan and the Eids are set by moon sighting, so they can differ by a day from the calculated date.
