Tips for sales in the UAE
- Two discounts don’t add up: “50% + 20% off” means 20% off the already reduced price, which is 60% off in total, not 70%.
- VAT: shop prices in the UAE must include 5% VAT, so the discounted shelf price is what you pay. Use the “With 5% VAT” line only if a price is shown before VAT.
- Rent increases: to check a Dubai rent increase against the RERA limits, use the rent increase calculator.
Questions people ask
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 2,400 is 2,400 × 15 ÷ 100 = 360.
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Take the new value minus the old value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80,000 to 86,000 is a 7.5% increase.
What is the original price before a discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). An item for AED 900 after 25% off was 900 ÷ 0.75 = AED 1,200.
