What the ratings mean
Each emirate’s education authority inspects its private schools and gives an overall rating: Outstanding, Very good, Good, Acceptable, Weak or Very weak. In Dubai this is KHDA, in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain it is ADEK (the Irtiqaa programme), and in Sharjah it is SPEA. The authority is shown next to each rating, with the year for Dubai. New schools show Not rated yet until their first inspection.
Questions people ask
Are school fees fixed?
Yes. Private schools can only charge the fees approved by their education authority (KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah), and they can only raise them when the authority allows it.
What other costs should I expect?
On top of tuition, schools may charge for registration, uniforms, books, transport, trips and activities. Ask the school for its full list of other charges.
When should I apply?
Popular schools fill up early. Many families apply 6 to 12 months before the start of the school year in late August, and register for waiting lists at more than one school.
