How zakat on wealth works
- Nisab: the minimum wealth on which zakat is due, equal to the value of 85 grams of pure gold. This calculator uses today’s gold price. If your total is below the nisab, no zakat is due at all; if it is at or above it, zakat is 2.5% of the whole total, not just the part above the nisab.
- One lunar year: zakat is due when your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for a full Hijri year (the hawl).
- Rate: 2.5% of the total wealth subject to zakat (one fortieth), but only when that total is at or above the nisab.
- What counts: cash and bank savings, gold and silver, shares and investments, money owed to you that you expect to get back, and goods held for sale.
- What does not: your home, car, furniture and other things for personal use, and the tools or equipment of your work.

Questions people ask
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school says zakat is due on all gold and silver, including jewellery you wear. The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery worn in normal amounts. Enter your jewellery in the gold boxes if you follow the first view.
Why do some calculators use silver for the nisab?
The nisab can also be set at 595 grams of silver, which is much lower in value. Some scholars prefer it because more people then pay zakat. This calculator uses the gold nisab, which is widely used in the UAE.
How do I pay zakat in the UAE?
You can pay directly to people in need, or through the UAE Zakat Fund and licensed charities, which accept zakat online, by bank transfer and through apps.
Is zakat al-fitr the same?
No. Zakat al-fitr is a small fixed amount per person paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. This calculator is for zakat on wealth (zakat al-mal).
